‘Do you want to change Nigeria, or do you want to win?’

This is the question that Obidients, supporters of Nigeria’s most prominent third force party, need to ask themselves. I am going to explain why.

Nigeria is currently in its longest unbroken period of democratic elections. It is uncontroversial to say that the country’s politics has settled into the two-party duopoly common in presidential democracies worldwide. Just like the Conservatives and Labour parties in the UK and the Republicans and Democrats in the US, the PDP and the various iterations of today’s APC dominate the electoral process.

But, in a presidential democracy with two major parties, what happens when a large section of the population feels like both parties are not offering them any choices they can get behind?
