Energy Transaction Brief: British International Investment Strengthens Backing for Kenya’s SunCulture with $4 Million Funding

Transaction Summary

British International Investment (BII) has invested an additional $4 million in SunCulture Kenya Ltd (SunCulture). Established in 2012, SunCulture provides smallholder farmers with reliable access to water, irrigation, lighting, and mobile charging using off-grid solar technology. Over 50,000 African farmers utilise SunCulture products, and the company boasts a 50% market share in East Africa for solar irrigation solutions, employing approximately 400 individuals. The latest investment aims to scale an innovative carbon financing initiative designed to lower upfront costs for farmers, potentially benefiting up to 16,000 smallholder farmers with affordable access to solar-powered irrigation technology. This funding builds upon BII's previous £1.7 million ($2.07 million) investment in 2023. The deal, formalised in December 2024, marks BII's first transaction under its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Shell Foundation, signed in April 2023.
